At the beginning of spring, under a bright blue sky, the police station in Cape Town was functioning like any other day.

The reception area was busy, with people rushing in and out, nervous and hurried.

Pieter, a middle-aged man with an exuberant nature, stepped into the building.

He was a gardener, known for his dry humor and unfailing good spirits.

  • Maar vandag was anders.

    But today was different.

  • Sy geliefde kruiwa was weg.

    His beloved wheelbarrow was gone.

  • Vermis.

    Missing.

  • Pieter was seker dit is gesteel.

Pieter was sure it was stolen.

  • "Pardon, meneer," begin Pieter, toe hy by die toonbank kom.

"Pardon, sir," Pieter began as he approached the counter.

  • "My kruiwa is weg! Ek dink dit is gesteel."

"My wheelbarrow is gone! I think it’s been stolen."

Behind the counter, Constable van Rensburg looked with his dark eyes.

He kept a serious face and furrowed his brow.

  • "’n Kruiwa, sê jy?" vra hy ongelooflik.

"A wheelbarrow, you say?" he asked incredulously.

  • "Ja, 'n kruiwa," bevestig Pieter.

    "Yes, a wheelbarrow," Pieter confirmed.

  • "Ek het hom net buite my hek losgelos, en toe ek terugkom, was hy weg."

"I just left it outside my gate, and when I returned, it was gone."

Van Rensburg ran a hand over his thinning hair and looked deeply into Pieter’s eyes.

"Sir, you realize a wheelbarrow is not a priority matter for the police?"

Pieter dramatically threw his hands in the air.

  • "Maar my kruiwa is só belangrik! Hoe sal ek my tuinwerk doen sonder dit?

"But my wheelbarrow is so important! How will I do my gardening without it? Spring is here, and the work is about to begin!"

It wasn’t the first time he’d dealt with a complaining citizen, but this time he had no patience for it.

Yet something in Pieter's eyes made him decide to listen.

  • "Goed," sê die konstabel stadig.

    "Alright," the constable said slowly.

  • "Vertel my meer."

    "Tell me more."

  • Pieter het aan die beskrywing begin gee.

    Pieter began to describe it.

"It’s a green wheelbarrow with a red wheel.

My name is written under the handle.

  • Jy kan nie fout maak nie."

    You can't miss it."

With a resigned look, Van Rensburg took another deep breath and stood up.

  • "Ek sal kyk in die verlore goedere."

"I’ll check the lost and found items."

  • Pieter het daar gestaan, onseker.

    Pieter stood there, uncertain.

He hadn’t really expected the constable to help.

After a few minutes, Van Rensburg came back, shrugged, and grumbled, "Come along."

They walked through a door to a smaller room.

And there, in the corner, stood a green wheelbarrow with a red wheel.

  • Pieter se gesig het opgevlam soos 'n kerstboom.

Pieter’s face lit up like a Christmas tree.

  • "Dis dít!" roep hy uit.

    "That’s it!" he exclaimed.

  • "Dis my kruiwa!"

    "That’s my wheelbarrow!"

Van Rensburg couldn’t help but smile as he pushed the wheelbarrow towards Pieter.

  • "Jy moet jou goed beter oppas, meneer," sê hy met 'n sagte stem.

"You need to take better care of your belongings, sir," he said softly.

Pieter hugged the wheelbarrow like a lost friend.

  • "Dankie, konstabel.

"Thank you, constable. I’ll make sure to keep a better eye on it."

With his wheelbarrow in hand, Pieter left the building.

He smiled over his shoulder and waved.

  • Van Rensburg het 'n sagte laggie gegee.

Van Rensburg let out a soft laugh.

He learned to have a bit more patience, even with the smallest of complaints.

And so, under the bright spring sun, Pieter walked back to his garden triumphantly.

He was ready to tackle the season, a bit wiser and much more vigilant about his beloved wheelbarrow.
