On the island of the city, at Plaça de Catalunya, there was a charming café with outdoor tables.

The summer sun shone on the tiles, and tourists and locals hurried in their preparations for the Festival of Sant Joan.

Marina and Pau sat at one of the tables, enjoying a pleasant breakfast.

  • Marina era arquitecta.

    Marina was an architect.

  • Li agradava la precisió i l'ordre.

    She liked precision and order.

She had been afraid of birds since she was a child.

  • Pau, en canvi, era tot el contrari.

Pau, on the other hand, was the complete opposite.

  • Estimava la natura i els ocells.

    He loved nature and birds.

  • Les seves diferències els feien bons amics.

Their differences made them good friends.

"What a beautiful morning!" Pau said, looking at the blue sky.

"Yes, it is," Marina nodded while taking a sip of her coffee.

  • Davant d'ells, hi havia dos croissants, ben daurats i apetitosos.

In front of them were two croissants, golden and appetizing.

Suddenly, a pigeon landed on the table.

It flapped its wings and, before Marina could react, the pigeon grabbed a croissant and flew away.

  • "Oh no! El meu esmorzar!" va cridar Marina, desesperada.

"Oh no! My breakfast!" Marina cried out, desperate.

  • Pau va riure.

    Pau laughed.

  • "No t'amoïnis, Marina. Només un colom. És el dia de Sant Joan! Amem divertir-nos."

"Don’t worry, Marina. It’s just a pigeon. It’s Sant Joan’s day! Let's have some fun."

  • Marina, però, estava alarmada.

    Marina, however, was alarmed.

Her eyes followed the pigeon’s movement.

  • La seva por la paralitzava.

    Her fear paralyzed her.

"Marina, breathe deeply," Pau said, putting his hand on her shoulder.

  • "Podem comprar un altre croissant. Gaudim del moment."

"We can buy another croissant. Let’s enjoy the moment."

  • Marina estava indecisa.

    Marina was undecided.

Should she leave quickly or face the situation?

  • Pau li va somriure, encoratjant-la.

    Pau smiled at her encouragingly.

  • "Els coloms no fan mal. Mira’l als ulls."

"Pigeons don’t hurt. Look it in the eyes."

  • Així ho va fer.

    She did so.

Marina gathered all her courage and stood up.

She followed the pigeon to another table and gently grabbed it with her hands.

  • El va mirar.

    She looked at it.

The pigeon was calm in her hands.

  • "No fas por, oi?" va murmurar Marina.

"You’re not scary, are you?" Marina murmured.

  • Pau va aplaudir.

    Pau clapped.

  • "Bona feina, Marina! Ho has fet genial!"

"Well done, Marina! You did great!"

They turned back to the table and saw the waiter bringing more croissants.

"Compliments of the house," the waiter smiled.

  • Es van asseure de nou.

    They sat back down.

  • Marina se sentia alleujada.

    Marina felt relieved.

"Maybe you should embrace spontaneity more, like the pigeon," Pau laughed.

"Maybe so," Marina agreed with a smile.

With the blue sky above them and the sun shining, they decided to go together to the Sant Joan festival that night.

They laughed and enjoyed the day, Marina a little less fearful, a bit freer, and Pau happy to see his friend embrace a bit more spontaneity.
