In the heart of Copenhagen, on a busy street, there was a cozy bakery.

  • Det var her, Lars kom hver dag.

It was here that Lars came every day.

  • Lars var ikke fra Danmark.

    Lars was not from Denmark.

He was an eager tourist who loved everything Danish.

  • En dag gik Lars ind i bageriet.

  • Han kiggede rundt og så en udfordring.

He looked around and saw a challenge.

"Rød grød med fløde," he read from the menu.

He tried to pronounce it, but it sounded wrong.

  • Alle lo.

    Everyone laughed.

  • "Næ, næ, ven," sagde bageren.

"No, no, friend," said the baker.

  • "Du siger det ikke rigtigt.

    "You're not saying it right."

  • " Bageren var en venlig mand.

The baker was a friendly man.

  • Han prøvede at lære Lars at sige det rigtigt.

He tried to teach Lars how to say it correctly.

  • Dag efter dag kom Lars.

    Day after day, Lars came.

  • Han prøvede og prøvede.

    He tried and tried.

  • Alle grinede.

    Everyone laughed.

  • Lars grinede også.

    Lars laughed too.

  • Men indeni var han frustreret.

    But inside, he was frustrated.

  • En uge senere havde Lars fået nok.

A week later, Lars had had enough.

  • Han var fast besluttet.

    He was determined.

  • Han ville sige det rigtigt.

He wanted to say it right.

All the way to the bakery, he practiced.

  • Hans tunge snublede over ordene.

His tongue stumbled over the words.

  • Men han gav ikke op.

    But he didn't give up.

  • Endelig, stod han igen i bageriet.

Finally, he stood in the bakery again.

  • Han tog en dyb indånding.

    He took a deep breath.

  • "Rød grød med fløde!

    "Rød grød med fløde!"

  • " sagde han.

    he said.

  • Alle holdt vejret.

    Everyone held their breath.

  • Bageren smilte bredt.

    The baker smiled widely.

  • "Perfekt udtale, min ven!

    "Perfect pronunciation, my friend!"

  • " sagde han.

    he said.

  • Alle klappede.

    Everyone applauded.

  • Lars rødmede, men han var stolt.

Lars blushed, but he was proud.

He had tried, and he had succeeded.

From that day on, when Lars walked into the bakery, he always ordered the same thing.

  • "Rød grød med fløde!

    "Rød grød med fløde!"

  • " sagde han med et grin.

    he said with a laugh.

And every time, everyone laughed along with him.

  • Det er en sjov ting med sprog.

It's a funny thing about language.

  • Nogle gange kan det være svært.

    Sometimes it can be difficult.

But with a little help and lots of practice, we can all learn to say "Rød grød med fløde."

  • "Dette bageri i København vil altid huske turisten, Lars.

This bakery in Copenhagen will always remember the tourist, Lars.

He showed them that it's not a failure to fail.

It's just a chance to try again.

And that it's always worth taking that chance, especially when it comes to rød grød med fløde.
