Exploring Tallinn's Hidden History: A Day in Old Town
Katrin seisis Toompea lossi ees.
Katrin stood in front of the Toompea Castle.
The sun shone brightly in the clear sky, and children around her laughed and talked.
Oli üleminekuaeg laste jaoks.
It was a transitional time for the children.
They were on a school trip to explore the medieval architecture of Tallinn's Old Town.
Katrin oli põnevil.
Katrin was excited.
She loved history and thought Tallinn's Old Town was one of the most beautiful places.
Their guide, Mr. Mägi, was knowledgeable and knew many stories about the old town.
He led the class to St. Nicholas' Church and spoke about its remarkable history.
"Keskaeg oli täis müsteeriume," ütles härra Mägi.
"The medieval era was full of mysteries," said Mr. Mägi.
"Siin on Niguliste kiriku torn.
"Here is the tower of St. Nicholas' Church.
Did you know that long ago, towers were the workplaces of guards?
Nad pidid vaatama, et vaenlased ei ründaks."
They had to watch to ensure enemies wouldn't attack."
Katrin kuulas huviga.
Katrin listened with interest.
She imagined guards looking out from those heights.
Järgmine peatus oli Raeapteek.
The next stop was the Town Hall Pharmacy.
See on üks vanimaid apteeke Euroopas.
It is one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe.
Härra Mägi näitas, kuidas vanasti ravimeid valmistati.
Mr. Mägi showed how medicines were made in the past.
Katrini sõbrad, Mari ja Kati, vaatasid ravimtaimi.
Katrin's friends, Mari and Kati, looked at the medicinal herbs.
Mari asked Katrin, "Do you think we'll get to see some old remedies?"
Katrin raputas pead.
Katrin shook her head.
"Ma ei tea, aga see oleks põnev."
"I don't know, but it would be exciting."
Nad liikusid edasi mööda kitsaid tänavaid.
They continued along narrow streets.
The cobblestone pavement of the old town was uneven, but Katrin loved it all.
Härra Mägi rääkis iga tänava ja hoone kohta.
Mr. Mägi spoke about each street and building.
Lapsed kuulasid tähelepanelikult.
The children listened attentively.
Päeva lõpus viidi nad Toompea lossi sisehoovi.
At the end of the day, they were taken to the courtyard of the Toompea Castle.
Seal oli suur vaade linnale.
There was a great view of the city.
Katrin vaatas kaugusse.
Katrin looked into the distance.
She felt so small in this vast history.
"Ma tahan kunagi reisida," ütles ta.
"I want to travel someday," she said.
"Ka mina," lisas Mari.
"Me too," added Mari.
When she got home, Katrin wrote in her diary everything she had learned that day.
See oli olnud seiklusrikas päev täis uusi teadmisi.
It had been an adventurous day full of new knowledge.
Katrin knew that Tallinn's Old Town would always remain in her heart.
She thought that all those old buildings hid stories she wanted to uncover.
Sellest päevast alates otsustas Katrin uurida ajalugu veelgi põhjalikumalt.
From that day on, Katrin decided to delve deeper into history.
The exhibit they had seen in the daylight remained in her memories forever.
Nüüd teadis Katrin kindlalt – ajalugu on tõeline seiklus.
Now Katrin knew for sure – history is a real adventure.
Ja iga päev on uus võimalus midagi õppida ja avastada.
And every day is a new opportunity to learn and discover something.
And so Katrin's wonderful day in Tallinn's Old Town came to an end.
