  • Fáilte go dtí an tuath glas na hÉireann, áit a raibh an fómhar ag druidim linn le Lughnasa le feiceáil sna sléibhte.

Welcome to the green countryside of Ireland, where the harvest was approaching with Lughnasa visible in the mountains.

  • Bhí an fhéile le tosú gan mhoill i measc na pubaill ildaite agus boladh an fheoil rósta ag líonadh an aer.

The festival was about to start amidst colorful tents and the smell of roasted meat filling the air.

  • Bhí Aisling agus Cian, beirt deartháireacha, ina seasamh ag imeall an mhargaidh mhóir.

Aisling and Cian, two siblings, stood at the edge of the large market.

  • Bhí coimhlint ag fás eatarthu le fada an lá, agus ní raibh aon déileáil déanta fós maidir leis an talamh a d'fhág a n-athair mar oidhreacht dóibh.

A conflict had been growing between them for a long time, and no agreement had yet been made regarding the land their father had left them as an inheritance.

  • Bhí súile Aisling tromchúiseach agus smaointe uirthi faoi chaomhnú an oidhreacht teaghlaigh.

Aisling's eyes were serious, her thoughts focused on preserving the family heritage.

  • "Ní mór dúinn an talamh a choinneáil," a dúirt sí, "Ba cheart dúinn é a shaothrú agus a choimeád.

"We must keep the land," she said, "We should cultivate and maintain it.

  • Is é ár n-oidhreacht é.

    It's our heritage."

  • "Ach bhí croí Cian ag iarraidh rud éigin eile.

But Cian’s heart desired something else.

  • "Aisling, ní féidir liom mo shaol a chaitheamh aici, ag obair ar an talamh," a dúirt sé, súil aige ar na sléibhte i bhfad uathu.

"Aisling, I can't spend my life here, working the land," he said, his gaze fixed on the distant mountains.

  • "Ba mhaith liom taisteal agus saol a fheiceáil.

"I want to travel and see the world."

  • "Agus an fhéile faoi lánseol, bhí deis á lorg ag Aisling a cuid díograise a thaispeáint do Cian.

With the festival in full swing, Aisling sought an opportunity to show her dedication to Cian.

  • D’fhógair sí a rannpháirtíocht i gcomórtas na boghdóireachta.

She announced her participation in the archery competition.

  • "Má bhuann mé an comórtas seo, ní mór dúinn an talamh a choinneáil.

"If I win this competition, we must keep the land.

  • Cilín bán, aontaigh ar feadh bliana eile é a fheiceáil.

Come on, agree to stay another year to see it through."

  • "Bhí aghaidh Cian éadrom… go fóill ag imeacht go bhfuil sé saor roimh deireadh an chomórtais.

Cian’s expression lightened... still intending to leave, grasping at his freedom before the competition’s end.

  • "Rothaitheoir boghdóireachta tobann?

    "An impromptu archer?

  • Maith go leor, ach níl mé ag fanacht," ar sé, súil go raibh deireadh ag teacht go luath.

Fine, but I'm not staying," he said, hoping the end was near.

  • Tháinig Lá na comórtais.

The Day of the competition arrived.

  • Bhí na iomaithigh ag ullmhú, na saighid gearrtha glan i measc torann na féile.

The competitors were preparing, their arrows cut cleanly amidst the sounds of the festival.

  • Chuala Cian torann fiúntach óna ndeartháir.

Cian even heard noteworthy noise from his sister.

  • "Táim ag fágáil," a scread Cian thrína smuga, a croí ag iarraidh a cuid breathnaíochtaí fa-shaoil, ach ag crith le buaireamh go fóill.

"I'm leaving," Cian shouted through his breath, his heart yearning for worldly sights but still trembling with worry.

  • Le scileanna dochreidte agus lámh chinnte, seol Aisling an tsaighead deiridh díreach isteach i lár an sprioc.

With incredible skill and a steady hand, Aisling sent her final arrow straight into the center of the target.

  • Thosaigh an slua ag brodamhail agus ag tabhairt onóir di, ag iarraidh nach raibh sé thréigthe glactha leis an talamh fós.

The crowd began cheering and honoring her, sensing that the land had not yet been abandoned.

  • Léime an deartháireacha air, ag bualadh bos léir ar a bhfód.

The siblings leaped together, clapping their hands on the soil.

  • Philibh Cian ag Aisling, ag éisteacht leis an slua.

Cian looked at Aisling, listening to the crowd.

  • "Táim anseo fós," market sé ag ionadú deartháir siúd, tuiscint cróm ar an méid a bhí iomaíocht air chiallaíonn.

"I'm still here," he said, stepping closer to his sister, understanding what the competition meant.

  • "Táim sásta," deir Aisling.

    "I'm happy," said Aisling.

  • "Ní féidir linn an talamh a choinneáil más mian leat taisteal.

"We can't keep the land if you wish to travel.

  • Ba cheart dúinn an talamh a roinnt leis an mbeirt aimsir.

We should share the land between us.

  • Fan anseo go ceann bliana eile agus féach mar a athraímid é.

Stay here for another year and see how we can change it."

  • "D'fhéadfadh Cian gan bhriseadh síocháin é.

    Cian couldn’t break the peace.

  • "Socartut.

    "Agreed.

  • Dean muid é" ar a ghuth, ag cur lámh siar ar an talamh a raibh siad trasna air cheana féin.

We'll do it," he said, putting a hand back on the land that they had once crossed.

  • Ag críochnú an lae ina gcodanna socair, labhair na deartháireacha faoin ngaoth ag imeacht, gan deighilt faoina n-aidir.

Ending the day in calm parts, the siblings spoke of the wind passing, without any separation in their minds.

  • "Leis sin, tiocfaidh deireadh," a dearfá, "mar a chorraigh an Lughnasa ár n-oidhreacht, mar sin athraíodh ár gcroí go buan.

"With that, it will end," you might say, "as Lughnasa stirred our heritage, so too did it change our hearts forever."
