Ivana was standing on Stradun, the main street of the old city of Dubrovnik.

Tourists were jostling around her, looking for the best spot for a photo.

  • Marko ju je promatrao.

    Marko was watching her.

He was new to the job, and his nervousness was evident on his face.

  • "Bok, Marko," rekla je Ivana s osmijehom.

"Hi, Marko," Ivana said with a smile.

  • "Spremni za početak?"

    "Ready to start?"

"Yes, I think I am," replied Marko, although he wasn't entirely sure.

  • Ivana je počela turu, pričajući o povijesti grada.

Ivana began the tour, talking about the history of the city.

  • "Dubrovnik je poznat po svojim impresivnim zidovima.

"Dubrovnik is known for its impressive walls.

  • Izgrađeni su u 13. stoljeću."

They were built in the 13th century."

  • Marko je pomno slušao.

    Marko listened attentively.

  • Htio je naučiti sve što je mogao.

He wanted to learn everything he could.

After a few minutes, Ivana handed it over to him.

  • "Sada će Marko preuzeti."

    "Now Marko will take over."

  • Marko je nervozno zagrizao usnu.

    Marko nervously bit his lip.

  • Pogledao je grupu turista.

He looked at the group of tourists.

  • "Ovdje, s desne strane, možemo vidjeti... hm..."

"Here, on the right side, we can see... um..."

  • Ivana je osjetila njegovu nesigurnost.

    Ivana sensed his uncertainty.

  • Prišla mu je bliže i tiho rekla:

She came closer to him and whispered,

  • "To je Knežev dvor."

    "That's the Rector's Palace."

  • "Knežev dvor," ponovio je Marko glasnije.

"The Rector's Palace," Marko repeated louder.

  • "Ovo je bio dom rektora Republike Dubrovnik."

"This was the home of the rector of the Republic of Dubrovnik."

The group listened attentively, but Marko felt the pressure.

  • Koliko još činjenica je morao zapamtiti?

How many more facts did he have to remember?

  • Ivana je primijetila njegovu nelagodu i odlučila mu pomoći.

Ivana noticed his discomfort and decided to help him.

  • "Marko, možeš li pričati o franjevačkom samostanu?"

"Marko, can you talk about the Franciscan Monastery?"

  • Marko je kimnuo glavom.

    Marko nodded.

  • Bio je zahvalan na smjeru.

He was grateful for the direction.

He started explaining the history of the monastery but then forgot an important fact.

  • Turisti su počeli šaptati među sobom, gubeći interes.

The tourists began whispering among themselves, losing interest.

  • Ivana je brzo preuzela.

    Ivana quickly took over.

"The Franciscan Monastery also has one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, opened in 1317."

  • Grupa se ponovno zainteresirala.

    The group was interested again.

After the tour, Ivana pulled Marko aside.

  • "Marko, razumijem da si nervozan.

"Marko, I understand that you're nervous.

  • Ali moraš vjerovati u sebe."

But you have to believe in yourself."

  • Marko je uzdahnuo.

    Marko sighed.

  • "Teško je.

    "It's hard.

  • Bojim se da ću sve pokvariti."

I'm afraid I'll mess everything up."

  • Ivana je stavila ruku na njegovu rame.

Ivana put a hand on his shoulder.

  • "Svi smo mi jednom bili novi.

    "We were all new once.

  • Bit ću tu da ti pomognem."

I'll be here to help you."

  • Marko se nasmiješio.

    Marko smiled.

  • "Hvala ti, Ivana.

    "Thank you, Ivana.

  • Pokušat ću biti bolji."

    I'll try to be better."

  • I tako su nastavili.

    And so they continued.

  • Ivana je postala strpljivija, a Marko sigurniji.

Ivana became more patient, and Marko more confident.

  • Svaki dan je postajao bolji vodič.

Every day he became a better guide.

Tourists enjoyed themselves, and the old city of Dubrovnik shone in its beauty.

In the end, Ivana and Marko stood on the city walls, looking at the sea.

  • "Bio si odličan danas," rekla je Ivana.

"You were great today," Ivana said.

  • "Hvala ti," rekao je Marko.

    "Thank you," Marko replied.

  • Ne bih mogao bez tvoje pomoći."

"I couldn't have done it without your help."

They both laughed, knowing that the friendship they had built was as valuable as the history of the city they shared.
