Every day, Oskar wakes up to the ticking clock.

  • Men denne dagen var annerledes.

    But this day was different.

  • Store hvite flak falt utenfor vinduet hans.

Large white flakes were falling outside his window.

  • "Snø," sa Oskar.

    "Snow," said Oskar.

  • Han smilet.

    He smiled.

  • Oskar bor langt opp i Oslo.

Oskar lives high up in Oslo.

  • Hans jobb er langt ned.

    His job is far down.

There are many cars between his home and his job.

  • Han liker ikke å vente på busser.

He doesn't like waiting for buses.

So he thought, "I can ski.

  • Jeg liker ski.

    I like skiing."

Oskar put on his red jacket with his hat and gloves.

  • Han tok sine ski og stokker.

He grabbed his skis and poles.

And then, outside his door, he started skiing.

  • Det var ikke lett.

    It wasn't easy.

  • Men Oskar er sterk.

    But Oskar is strong.

  • Han liker arbeid.

    He likes the work.

  • Skiene hans gikk opp og ned, opp og ned.

His skis went up and down, up and down.

He climbed up hills and glided down at high speeds.

  • Det var både morsomt og kaldt.

It was both fun and cold.

  • Snart var husene få.

    Soon there were fewer houses.

Then it became crowded with shops and people.

Oskar knew he was now in the city.

There was almost no space for Oskar to ski.

  • Han var forsinket.

    He was running late.

  • Men han holdt på å gå.

    But he kept going.

Finally, it was time to stop.

  • Han var foran hans jobb.

He was in front of his job.

  • Det var mange folk der.

    There were many people there.

  • De så på Oskar med store øyne.

They looked at Oskar with wide eyes.

"I skied," said Oskar and smiled, "to avoid all the cars."

  • " Folkene lo.

    The people laughed.

  • De klappet for Oskar.

    They applauded Oskar.

Oskar felt a warmth inside himself.

He had managed to get to work, and he had managed to bring smiles to the people around him.

Oskar took off his skis and went inside the building.

  • Han smilte hele dagen.

    He smiled all day.

Yes, he was cold, he was late, but he was also happy.

Oskar knew there would be more snowy days in Oslo, and he might try it again.

  • Og det gjorde han.

    And he did.

  • Oskar gikk på ski igjen og igjen.

    Oskar skied again and again.

  • Og hver gang, lo folkene og klappet for ham.

And each time, people laughed and applauded for him.

  • Oskar likte de snørike dagene.

    Oskar enjoyed the snowy days.

He felt that he could climb any hill if he tried hard.

  • Og det gjorde han.

    And he did.

  • Oskar ble kjent som "ski-mannen" av Oslo.

Oskar became known as the "ski man" of Oslo.

  • Han ga smil til folkene.

He brought smiles to the people.

And best of all, he reached his job on time.

  • Han vant mot de mange bilene.

    He beat the many cars.

And in his heart, Oskar felt that he also won the big city of Oslo.

So, even though it was difficult, Oskar had fun.

It was cold, but Oskar was warm inside.

And the big city of Oslo, it was no longer big for Oskar, but a place where he could smile and be happy.
