A Day at Keukenhof: Discovering The Beauty of Dutch Horticulture
De zon scheen helder boven de velden van Keukenhof.
The sun shone brightly over the fields of Keukenhof.
Sanne en Niels stapten uit de schoolbus.
Sanne and Niels stepped out of the school bus.
Ze keken hun ogen uit.
They couldn't believe their eyes.
Bloemen overal!
Flowers everywhere!
"Wauw," zei Sanne.
"Wow," said Sanne.
"Wat veel kleuren!"
"So many colors!"
"Ja," antwoordde Niels, "het is prachtig hier."
"Yes," answered Niels, "it's beautiful here."
De leraar, meneer Van Dam, stond bij de ingang.
The teacher, Mr. Van Dam, stood at the entrance.
Hij riep de klas bij elkaar.
He called the class together.
"Vandaag leren we over de Nederlandse tuinbouw," zei hij.
"Today, we will learn about Dutch horticulture," he said.
"Maar eerst: genieten van de bloemen!"
"But first: enjoy the flowers!"
De klas liep het park in.
The class walked into the park.
Overal waren bloemen.
There were flowers everywhere.
Tulpen, narcissen, rozen, en nog veel meer.
Tulips, daffodils, roses, and many more.
Sanne pakte haar notitieboek.
Sanne took out her notebook.
"Ik wil alles opschrijven," zei ze.
"I want to write everything down," she said.
"Goed idee," zei Niels.
"Good idea," said Niels.
"Maar vergeet niet om ook te kijken."
"But don't forget to look around as well."
Ze liepen samen verder.
They walked together.
Ze zagen een grote kas.
They saw a large greenhouse.
Binnen waren exotische bloemen.
Inside were exotic flowers.
"Wat zijn dat?"
"What are those?"
vroeg Sanne.
asked Sanne.
"Dat zijn orchideeën," zei meneer Van Dam.
"Those are orchids," said Mr. Van Dam.
"Ze zijn heel bijzonder."
"They are very special."
Sanne schreef alles op.
Sanne wrote everything down.
Niels keek naar de bloemen.
Niels looked at the flowers.
"Ik wist niet dat er zoveel soorten bloemen waren," zei hij.
"I didn't know there were so many kinds of flowers," he said.
Ze gingen verder naar een groot veld.
They continued to a large field.
Hier hadden ze een opdracht.
Here they had an assignment.
"Zoek tien verschillende bloemen," zei meneer Van Dam.
"Find ten different flowers," said Mr. Van Dam.
"Noteer hun namen en kleuren."
"Note their names and colors."
Sanne en Niels werkten samen.
Sanne and Niels worked together.
Ze vonden tulpen in rood, geel, en paars.
They found tulips in red, yellow, and purple.
Narcissen waren wit en geel.
Daffodils were white and yellow.
Ze zagen zelfs blauwe druifjes.
They even saw grape hyacinths.
"Tien bloemen," zei Sanne trots.
"Ten flowers," said Sanne proudly.
Ze lieten hun lijst zien aan meneer Van Dam.
They showed their list to Mr. Van Dam.
"Heel goed!"
"Very good!"
zei hij.
he said.
De klas verzamelde bij een grote fontein.
The class gathered by a large fountain.
Hier gaf meneer Van Dam uitleg.
Here Mr. Van Dam gave an explanation.
"Nederland is beroemd om zijn bloemen," zei hij.
"The Netherlands is famous for its flowers," he said.
"We exporteren bloemen over de hele wereld."
"We export flowers all over the world."
"Ik wist dat niet," zei Niels.
"I didn't know that," said Niels.
"Interessant!"
"Interesting!"
Het was bijna tijd om terug te gaan.
It was almost time to go back.
Sanne keek nog één keer rond.
Sanne looked around one more time.
"Wat een mooie plek," zei ze.
"What a beautiful place," she said.
"Ja," zei Niels.
"Yes," said Niels.
"Dit was een leuke excursie."
"This was a fun excursion."
In de bus terug naar school lachten ze en praatten over wat ze hadden geleerd.
On the bus back to school, they laughed and talked about what they had learned.
"Ik wil later misschien in de tuinbouw werken," zei Sanne.
"Maybe I want to work in horticulture someday," said Sanne.
"Ik ook," zei Niels.
"Me too," said Niels.
"Of misschien worden we bloemisten."
"Or maybe we'll become florists."
Toen ze bij de school aankwamen, zwaaiden ze naar elkaar.
When they arrived at school, they waved to each other.
"Tot morgen," zei Sanne.
"See you tomorrow," said Sanne.
"Tot morgen," zei Niels.
"See you tomorrow," said Niels.
Ze wisten dat ze deze dag nooit zouden vergeten.
They knew they would never forget this day.
En zo eindigde een dag vol bloemen en nieuwe kennis.
And so ended a day full of flowers and newfound knowledge.
Keukenhof had een speciaal plekje in hun hart gevonden.
Keukenhof had found a special place in their hearts.
